At least thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
