Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these drugs should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
