Will My Euphorbia Ritchiei Once Again Sprout Back?
What’s the Issue?
My Euphorbia ritchiei grew a single leaf, unfortunately it got accidentally knocked off and currently it stands leafless. Will it sprout again?
Understanding the Situation
Please don’t be alarmed, the east African succulent is unique in that it produces fleshy leaves along its ridged stems throughout its growing season, then often drops them during colder months. Originating from Kenya, rainfall is seasonal. This species adapts by growing foliage during rains, then dropping its leaves when water is scarce to preserve moisture and resources. Its photosynthetic stems are able to produce energy so it can thrive leafless for long periods.
Recommended Care
To encourage fresh growth, it requires intense, direct sunlight; place it in the brightest location indoors available, such as a sun-drenched windowsill, or supplement with a plant lamp. Warmth will also stimulate foliage development, so keep it in a consistently heated space. Once the potting mix is fully dry, water thoroughly until you see water escape through the drainage holes. Do this during warmer months when the plant is in its growth phase. During dormancy, cut back on watering, as this is its natural rest period. A diluted succulent feed during the active period will help support vigorous foliage.
Prevention
Learn this plant’s natural rhythm; bare during cool months, leafy in warmth. Please resist the urge to overwater when it’s dormant, as it may rot the roots. Consider it as a natural pattern, with the return of sunlight and warmth as seasons change, the plant should sprout leaves again.
